Archive material and source history
Suni Clay formed in New York City with Sunai Johnson as frontman, guitarist Pat Barrett, bassist Shane Smith, and drummer Dave Williams. Their debut album 'My Hood' came out in 2003, and the title track became something of an anthem. They followed it with 'Suni Clay 2' in 2005 and 'Unleashed' in 2008.
Their lyrics about urban life drew some criticism for being too explicit, but they kept at it. The lineup changed over time, though Johnson stayed at the center. Guitarist Static, who also worked as Static Major, was part of the band before going solo.
They worked with Nas, Busta Rhymes, and Erykah Badu. Another track, 'In A Hood Near You,' rounds out what they're known for.
