Background notes

Archive material and source history

Supercat is the stage name of William Anthony Maragh, a Jamaican dancehall artist who started out in Kingston's local sound systems. He signed with King Jammy's label in 1985, and his debut single 'Dolly My Baby' became a hit that year, known for its catchy melody and playful lyrics about a troublesome lover.

He released albums like 'Talking Supercat' in 1986, 'Jamaica Superman' in 1987, and 'Don Dada' in 1990. His music often featured collaborations with other dancehall figures such as Shabba Ranks, Bounty Killer, and Beenie Man.

In 1988, Maragh was arrested for drug possession, which briefly interrupted his career. He worked with musicians including saxophonist Dean Fraser, keyboardist Robbie Lyn, and guitarist Sly Dunbar on recordings.
