Swell Maps came together in Bristol around 1972, with Nikki Sudden and his brother Epic Soundtracks (Kevin Haskins) at the core, alongside Jowe Head and Richard Jobson. They were part of that loose, fertile post-punk moment, but their sound was its own thing, a bit raw, a bit experimental, never quite settling into one lane.
Their records, like the early single 'Maps' and the album 'A Trip to Marineville' from 1979, had a scrappy, off-kilter energy. They could sound like a ramshackle garage band one minute and veer into something noisier and more abstract the next. 'Cake Shop' is a good example of that mix: a catchy, almost pop melody wrapped in a rough, home-recorded feel.
The band didn't last long, calling it quits around 1980 after a few more albums. You can hear echoes of their DIY spirit and willingness to get weird in later bands that valued texture and attitude over polish.
