Sydney Youngblood

Sydney Youngblood was a soul and R&B singer from Savannah, Georgia, who started singing early and later moved to California. He spent some time with the group Starpoint before going solo in 1988 with a self-titled album that didn't catch on commercially. His big moment came in 1991 with the single 'If Only I Could,' a ballad about missing someone that connected with a lot of people and helped his album sell well.

That song, along with another track like 'I'd Rather Go Blind,' defined his sound, smooth, heartfelt vocals over straightforward R&B arrangements. He put out a few more albums in the 1990s, including Feeling Good and In the Mood, but never quite matched that earlier success. There were some personal struggles and legal issues along the way, including a plagiarism lawsuit over 'If Only I Could,' but the details are murky.

Youngblood kept recording into the late '90s with albums like Youngblood and That's What I'm Here For, working with various musicians and producers. He's remembered mostly for that one hit and a handful of other songs that captured a certain mood of early '90s R&B.
