SYRIS formed in New York City in 1985 with vocalist Andros Kyprianides, guitarist Jay Raney, bassist Mike Cristofaro, and drummer Jason Papay. They self-funded their debut album 'Fighting for Ourselves' in 1986 after facing resistance from record labels who found their music too aggressive. Their sound developed through that decade with albums like 'Syndicate of Hate' in 1988.
The band's 1990 album 'Angry at the World' gave them their signature track, 'Angry At The World,' which became something of an anthem. They followed it with 'M.I.A.' in 1992 and 'Out of the Shadows' in 1995. Other songs from their catalog include 'Beautiful Lies And The Ugly Truth,' 'Broken Soul,' and 'Solitary War.'
Their lyrics often dealt with frustration and social issues, which led some critics to accuse them of promoting violence or misogyny. SYRIS maintained they were addressing real problems and giving voice to disaffection. They were known for intense live performances that matched the confrontational tone of their recordings.
