System of a Down formed in Los Angeles in the late 1990s with Serj Tankian, Daron Malakian, Shavo Odadjian, and John Dolmayan. Their sound pulled from heavy metal and rock, but also worked in Middle Eastern melodic touches and lyrics that often dealt with political subjects. Their self-titled debut came out in 1998.

In 2001, the single 'Chop Suey!' and the album 'Toxicity' broke them into the mainstream. Songs like 'Aerials' and 'B.Y.O.B.' followed, built on heavy riffs, shifting rhythms, and Tankian's operatic vocal style. They put out two more albums, 'Mezmerize' and 'Hypnotize', in 2005 before going on an extended hiatus.

The band's catalog is relatively compact, five studio albums in total, but songs like 'Chop Suey!' and 'Toxicity' have remained fixtures in rock playlists long after their release.
