't Kliekske came together in the early 1990s in Ostend, a coastal town in Belgium. The group had four members: Luk De Bruyker on vocals, Wim De Bruycker on guitar, Stefaan De Bruycker on drums, and Marc Deprez on bass. Their name translates roughly to "the Clique."
In 1994, they put out their first album, "De Groote Volgende." The track "Al Van Den Drogen Haring" from that record became their calling card. It's a lighthearted song about a merchant's troubles with a barrel of salted herring, built around a catchy melody and playful lyrics.
That song got some attention and sparked a bit of debate at the time, with some listeners finding it silly. But it connected with plenty of others in Flanders. The band kept playing shows and put out more albums after that, often appearing at local festivals. Their sound had a straightforward, humorous quality that felt particular to their corner of Belgium.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
