Archive material and source history
't Merretkoer formed in 1993 in the Brabant province of the Netherlands. The group included Tonnie Swinkels on vocals and accordion, Gerard van Maasakkers on accordion, Bertus van Hooijdonk on guitar and vocals, Jan van de Ven on bass and vocals, and Cor Jansen on drums. Their songs, like "D'n olifant" and "'t Leve is e fees," often mixed folk and polka with a light, humorous touch.
In 1998, their song "De Zwerver" drew criticism from animal rights activists over its lyrics. They released albums such as "D'n Olifant" in 1995, "As 't Leven Is" in 2000, and "Geel en Blauw" in 2010, the last a collaboration with PSV Eindhoven. Tonnie Swinkels died in 2017.
