Archive material and source history
Taali formed in Los Angeles in 2004 around vocalist Amit Sharma and sitarist Vijay Gupta, later joined by percussionist Himanshu Joshi and tabla player Purbayan Chatterjee. Their name comes from the rhythmic clapping of hands, which fits their approach to blending traditional Indian elements with contemporary urban styles.
They released their self-titled debut album in 2007, followed by 'India.Arie' in 2009, 'Earth Rhythms' in 2013, and 'Live at the Kennedy Center' in 2017. Their song 'Los Angeles' reflects their connection to the city where they started.
The band maintained that they were trying to introduce these sounds to new audiences rather than dilute them.
