Tabajara do Samba formed in 1977 as a collective of musicians drawn to samba and bossa nova. Their lineup has included Roberto Menescal on guitar and vocals, Ronaldo Bastos on vocals and percussion, Luizão Maia on drums, Helio Delmiro on piano and accordion, and Celso Fonseca on vocals and guitar.
They released their first album in 1978, followed by others like Tabajara a Dois in 1980 and Samba Jazz in 1982. In 2013, they put out Portela 2014, a song that became widely known in Brazil. The track pays tribute to the Portela samba school.
Their sound pulls from traditional samba rhythms and bossa nova harmonies, with some jazz energy mixed in. They've kept recording over the decades, with Sambas e Bossas arriving in 2017.
