Tabaré Cardozo was born in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1951. He grew up playing the tambores, the traditional drums used in candombe ceremonies, absorbing the rhythmic traditions of the African diaspora in his country.
In the early 1980s, he formed Tabaré Cardozo y Los Afro Uruguayos. The group blended candombe with other genres, and their 1991 song "Barbosa" became particularly well-known. Inspired by a Uruguayan soccer player, the track appears alongside others like "Botija Maula" and "Centella" in his catalog.
Cardozo's music sometimes reflected his views on social justice and human rights. He passed away in 2018.
