Take 5 formed in Philadelphia in 1961 with five vocalists: Johnny Mathis, David Simmons, Richard Street, Bill Brown, and Clarence Bassett. Their debut single "You Can't Stop Me" came out in 1967 and did well on the R&B charts. The group's sound leaned on tight vocal harmonies that mixed falsetto and baritone parts.

In 1968 they released "Baby I Can't Let Go," which became their biggest hit. Other songs in their catalog include "Deeper Love," "Saved The Best For Last," and "To Make You Love Me."

Internal tensions led to lineup changes around 1970, when David Simmons left and was replaced by Al Johnson. A legal dispute over the name Take 5 followed, which prevented the original members from performing under that name. The original lineup was inducted into the Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame in 2014.
