Editor's note

Taking Back Sunday's Long Island emo and shifting lineups

A Long Island band whose early-2000s songs like 'Cute Without The 'E'' defined a particular strain of alternative rock.

For the early sound, 'Cute Without The 'E' (Cut From The Team)' still hits. Later, something like 'MakeDamnSure' shows how they carried that energy forward.

Their 2002 debut 'Tell All Your Friends' landed with a specific audience looking for something raw and confessional. Songs like 'Cute Without The 'E' (Cut From The Team)' and later 'MakeDamnSure' became fixtures, built around Adam Lazzara's vocals and lyrics that felt direct even as members came and went. They maintained that connection through various lineup changes over the years.

They formed on Long Island in 1999. After their debut found an audience, guitarist John Nolan left in 2003, and later shifts saw bassist Shaun Cooper and guitarist Eddie Reyes depart in 2010. They kept releasing albums like 'Tidal Wave' that same year, along with 'Where You Want to Be' and 'Louder Now'.

Taking Back Sunday formed on Long Island in 1999 with Adam Lazzara on vocals, John Nolan on guitar and vocals, Eddie Reyes on guitar, Shaun Cooper on bass, and Mark O'Connell on drums. Their 2002 debut album 'Tell All Your Friends' found an audience with songs like 'Cute Without The 'E' (Cut From The Team)' and helped define a particular strain of early-2000s alternative rock.

Nolan left the band in 2003, and Matt Fazzi joined as his replacement. The lineup shifted again in 2010 when Cooper and Reyes departed, with Jesse Lacey and David Wajda coming in on bass and guitar. The band released 'Tidal Wave' that same year. They've put out several other albums, including 'Where You Want to Be,' 'Louder Now,' and 'Happiness Is.'

Songs like 'MakeDamnSure' and 'Sink Into Me' became fixtures for them. The group's sound, built around Lazzara's vocals and often introspective lyrics, maintained a connection with their listeners through various changes in personnel.
