Tamboritau formed in Salvador, Bahia in 1992, drawing from the city's samba-reggae traditions along with reggae and African rhythms. Their 1998 album 'Onde tem Tambor' gave them their signature track of the same name. The band's lineup included Gilvan Alves on vocals, Ivan Gomes on bass, Marcelo Durval on drums, Fábio Portela on percussion, and Daniel Cândido on guitar.
In 2001, Tamboritau faced plagiarism allegations over 'Onde tem Tambor' but were cleared after legal proceedings. Gilvan Alves left the band in 2006, replaced by Claudia Cunha. They released several albums through the 2000s including 'Olha o Tamboritau' in 2000, 'Dendê' in 2003, 'Reggae Bahia' in 2005, and a live album in 2008.
