Tampa Red was born Hudson Woodbridge in 1903 and got his name from his time in Florida. He started out playing guitar and harmonica on street corners, eventually making his way to Chicago in the 1920s. There he became part of the city's blues scene, working with musicians like Big Bill Broonzy and Roosevelt Sykes.

Tampa Red kept recording for decades, putting out hundreds of sides that ranged from hokum numbers to slower blues like "Mean Mistreater Blues." He died in 1981, having spent most of his life playing the music he started with on those street corners.
