Tapa no Couro formed in São Paulo in the early 1980s, a time when rock music faced skepticism in Brazil. Their name translates to "Slap on the Leather," and they started by playing small clubs and busking on streets. The band was led by vocalist Marcelo Nova, with guitarist Júlio Rasec, bassist Charles Gavin, and drummer Picolé.
In 1984 they released their debut album "Carnaval do Terror," which included the song "Para De Ligar De Madrugada." That track became an instant hit and established them in Brazilian rock. Their lyrics sometimes stirred debate, with some critics accusing them of promoting questionable themes while others saw them as voices for a new generation.
They followed with albums like "Tem Que Ser Por Amor" in 1985 and "Homem-Bomba" in 1990. Other songs like "Nasci Pra Te Amar" and "Amizade Colorida" became staples on Brazilian rock radio. After going on hiatus in the late 1990s, they reunited in 2011 for live shows that drew large crowds.
