Tarja Preta²

Tarja Preta² formed in São Paulo in the late 1990s. The band included vocalist Nando Reis, guitarist Carlinhos Brown, bassist Dadi Carvalho, and drummer João Barone. Their sound drew from samba and rock, creating something that felt both familiar and new in Brazilian music.

Their song "Cafajestão" became particularly well-known, with lyrics that took aim at corrupt politicians. This directness sometimes brought them trouble from conservative groups, but it also connected with listeners who appreciated the blunt social commentary. Other tracks like "Assim Me Vingo Dela" and "Cidade do Rock" showed their range across different rhythms and moods.

They released several albums, starting with their self-titled debut in 1998. A live recording from Rock in Rio in 2003 captured their energetic stage presence. While their music tackled serious themes, it was built on catchy melodies and driving rhythms that kept people moving.
