Tchai formed in 2003 with Beto Lee on vocals and guitar, Andrea Martins on bass and vocals, and Felipe Catto on keyboards and vocals. They took their name from the Russian tea drink, which hinted at the mix of influences they brought together. Their debut album 'Um Dia a Mais' came out in 2005, and its title track became a hit in Brazil, setting a tone with its reflective lyrics about time passing.
After Catto left in 2009 to work on solo material, Lee and Martins kept the band going. They put out albums like 'Quatro' in 2007, 'Navegar' in 2010, and 'Acalanto' in 2012, gradually moving from their early folk-pop sound toward more electronic and ambient textures. Songs like 'Não Sabe Viver' and 'Quem É Você' from this period show that shift.
They've continued recording into the 2020s with albums like 'Nação' in 2020, maintaining a steady output without much mainstream fanfare. Their music has always leaned toward the introspective side, which has earned them a dedicated following in Brazil who connect with tracks like 'A Vida Não Para' and 'Fim da Linha'.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
