Tchê Aprochega formed in the 1990s in Farroupilha, a small town in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The band's name comes from a local slang term used to invite someone closer. Their original lineup included Fernando "Magrão" Garcia on lead vocals and acoustic guitar, Iuri Ribas on accordion, Mauro Moraes on bass, and Daniel Gonzaga on drums.
They play vaneira, a traditional gaucho folk genre from southern Brazil. Their 2006 album "Vaneira Bem Baguala" gave them their breakthrough and featured the song of the same name. Some traditionalists criticized their approach for being too modern, while in 2014 they faced plagiarism accusations regarding a melody from a Uruguayan song, which they denied.
