Tearwave formed in California in the early 2000s, starting as a duo with Jonathan Pierce on vocals and guitar and Sean Buckley on drums. They later expanded with Jeff Halbert joining on lead guitar in 2002 and Tim Kelliher on bass in 2003. Their music leaned into atmospheric, introspective territory from the beginning.
Their song "Melinda" became a notable track for them, appearing on their 2000 album of the same name. Other songs like "Lotus Flower," "72 Bpm," and "Dream Bliss" show their preference for mood-driven, slower-paced arrangements. They also recorded a cover of The Church's "Under The Milky Way."
In 2003 they released "The World is a Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid to Die," followed by "The Sun's Gone Dim and the Sky's Turned Black" in 2006. These albums continued their blend of alternative, shoegaze, and post-punk influences without much commercial fanfare. Their sound remained consistently ethereal and textural throughout their recordings.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
