Teatro Asfalto

Teatro Asfalto formed in Madrid in the early 1980s, a post-punk band that came up during Spain's transition to democracy. Their music had a confrontational edge, with lyrics that took on addiction, mental illness, and social injustice. Songs like 'Bulimídia' and 'Condomínio' gave voice to subjects that weren't often discussed openly at the time.

The original lineup included Guillermo Jiménez Latorre on vocals, Carlos Torero on guitar, Raúl Mannola on bass, and Manolo Morales on drums. Guitarist Juan Carlos 'Gato' Pérez joined later. They released three studio albums: 'Teatro Asfalto' in 1984, 'Maldita Voluntad' in 1985, and 'El Peaje' in 1987.

Their performances mixed punk energy with theatrical elements, and 'Bulimídia' in particular drew attention for its direct treatment of media obsession and eating disorders. The song became something of an anthem for young listeners who felt marginalized, though its graphic nature also sparked criticism.

Teatro Asfalto's raw approach opened space for other Spanish bands to tackle difficult themes. Their records still surface in conversations about that period, not as polished artifacts but as documents of a specific moment when music could still feel dangerous and necessary.
