Terço formed in São Paulo in the late 1990s with Tiago Arrais on vocals and guitar, Fabio Golfetti on guitar, Rafael Castro on bass, and Fabio Rosa on drums. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1999.
That album included "Maria, Tu Sabias?," a ballad addressed to the Virgin Mary that became widely known in Brazil. The band's lyrics sometimes drew criticism for how they handled religious themes.
Terço kept making music after their debut, staying with their particular approach to Catholic tradition and contemporary sound.
