Teresa Tarouca

Teresa Tarouca grew up in Lisbon's Mouraria neighborhood, a place that shows up in her song "Passeio À Mouraria." She started singing in local taverns, influenced by fado singers like Amália Rodrigues and Alfredo Marceneiro.

Her first album was 2002's "Fado em Movimento," which mixed traditional fado with other styles. She followed it with records like "Avé Maria" in 2004 and "Cantinho das Lágrimas" in 2010. Some of her songs, including "Não Sou Fadista de Raça" and "Saudade, Silêncio e Sombra," reflect her approach to the genre.

Tarouca worked with musicians outside fado, like jazz pianist Luiz Peixoto and cellist Pedro Gonçalves. Her music sometimes brought criticism from traditionalists, but she kept recording and performing with her own sound.
