Archive material and source history
Teresa Tseng was born in 1953 in Yunlin, Taiwan. She started singing at six and won a national competition in 1966, which got her professional career going. Early recordings like 'The Moon Represents My Heart' and 'Sweet Honey' showed her clear, melodic voice and found listeners in Taiwan and elsewhere.
In 1974, her song 'When Will You Return' became a hit in Japan, making her one of the first Chinese artists to break through there. She recorded several albums in Japanese after that. Back home, her music remained popular, with songs like 'Want To Meet Someone' among her well-known tracks.
Her career faced political complications. Later in the 1980s, she drew criticism from Taiwan's government for speaking out on social issues. She kept recording and touring internationally through these periods.
