Background notes

Archive material and source history

Terminal War formed in 1985 around vocalist and guitarist Aaron "Axe" Anderson and bassist Todd "Vulcan" Sherman. They came up playing a raw, aggressive style of thrash metal, drawing from bands like Slayer and Exodus. Their early years saw some lineup changes and the usual financial struggles that come with being an underground metal band.

In 1989 they put out their debut album "Thrashing Through Hell," which established their sound with its fast riffs and guttural vocals. They kept at it through the early '90s with albums like "Reign of Darkness" and "World of Pain," and toured enough to share bills with Testament and Anthrax. Their lyrics sometimes touched on politics and social issues, which drew some criticism, but they mostly just kept playing their version of thrash.

You can hear what they were doing on songs like "Thrash Metal" and "Guerra Terminal", straight-ahead, no-frills thrash with that late-'80s/early-'90s underground feel. They were part of that wave of bands that kept the style going through the decade.
