Archive material and source history
Terry Jacks was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1944. He started performing as a teenager and formed The Poppy Family with Susan Pesklevits in 1967. Their psychedelic folk sound produced hits like "Which Way You Goin', Billy?" and "Where Evil Grows" before the group dissolved in 1972.
After The Poppy Family ended, Jacks recorded a version of Jacques Brel's French song "Le Moribond" in 1974. He translated it as "Seasons In The Sun," which became an international hit. The song's melancholy tone and lyrics about a dying man connected with listeners, though Brel's family reportedly disapproved of Jacks' lyrical changes.
