That Dog

That Dog formed in Los Angeles in the early 1990s around singer-songwriter Petra Haden and guitarist Tony Maxwell. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1994, and the song 'Angel' got some play on college radio. They put out a handful of records over the next decade or so, including 'Retreat from the Sun' in 1997 and 'Old LP' in 2009.

Petra Haden's voice and the band's straightforward indie rock approach gave them a sound that felt a little different from some of their peers. Songs like 'Annie' and 'Being with You' have a direct, unadorned quality that stuck with people. The lineup shifted at times, with Josh Freese playing drums on later albums, but Haden and Maxwell remained at the center.

They weren't a huge commercial act, but they built a modest, steady following. The music holds up as a particular strain of 90s indie, not overly fussy, with melodies that land without much fanfare.
