Background notes

Archive material and source history

The 3Whys formed in São Paulo in 1993 with Renato Piau on vocals and guitar, Henrique Portugal on bass, and Marcelo Maldonado on drums. They started as three friends who liked rock, pop, and classical music, though early on some critics weren't sure about mixing those sounds together.

Their first album came out in 1997, called 'E Se Eu Ficar Aqui'. That record had strings and guitar work with lyrics that tended to look inward. They kept writing about love and loss on later albums like 'O Caminho' in 1999 and 'Aurora' in 2003.

Some of their songs also touched on social or political topics, which got them both criticism and support. They had a track called 'It's A Graveyard Of Love' that shows their style, melodic but with some edge to it.
