The 49ers formed in San Francisco in the mid-1960s with Billy Shields, Ronnie Coleman, Frankie Ervin, and George Booker. They started playing R&B and gospel in local clubs before their 1969 single "Touch Me" became a hit. That song's driving rhythm and vocal harmonies gave them their moment.
After Booker died in a car accident in 1971, the group kept recording through the 1970s and 1980s but never matched that earlier success. They disbanded in 1991. Songs like "Touch Me" and "Never Say Never" are what people still remember.
