The Academic formed in Mullingar, Ireland with Craig Fitzgerald on vocals and guitar, Matthew Murtagh on guitar, Stephen Murtagh on drums, and Ryan O'Shaughnessy on bass. They released their debut single 'Different' in 2015, which started getting them attention.
Their first album 'Tales from the Backseat' came out in 2018, featuring songs like 'Not Your Summer.' They followed it with 'Sitting Pretty' in 2020, which included tracks such as 'Why Can't We Be Friends?' and 'Girlfriends.'
In 2019, they had to postpone a tour when Ryan O'Shaughnessy had a health issue. The next year, there was some talk about 'Why Can't We Be Friends?' and plagiarism claims, but that got sorted out without much fuss.
