The Alliance formed in the early 2000s with Ethan James on vocals, David Carter on guitar, Emily Reed on bass, and James Blackwood on drums. They put out their first album, Echoes of a Broken Heart, in 2004. Over the next decade or so they released several more records, including The Waiting in 2007 and The Illusive Dream in 2010.
In 2012, Ethan James talked publicly about dealing with depression. Around that time, some listeners noticed similarities between the band's song The Last Goodbye and a track by another artist, which led to some discussion about the song's origins.
They kept making albums through the 2010s, with The Last Goodbye coming out in 2016 and Into the Unknown following in 2019.
