A Los Angeles band that turned bright, grounded pop into major hits in the 1980s.
For the bright, jangly side, 'Walking Down Your Street' from 'Different Light' works. 'Eternal Flame' shows the softer, more direct side they could do.
They had a sound that felt both sunny and real, with jangly guitars and those layered harmonies. 'Manic Monday,' written by Prince, became their first big hit in 1986. 'Eternal Flame' from their 1988 album 'Everything' is still one of their most recognizable tracks.
They formed in 1981 as The Colours, changed their name to The Bangles in 1983, and released their first album 'All Over the Place' the next year. The lineup shifted over the years, with Annette Zilinskas leaving in 1989 and Debbi Peterson departing in 1991. They put out 'Doll Revolution' in 2003.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
