A Scottish group from the late 1990s whose sound mixed folk, electronica, and psychedelia into something hard to pin down.
If you're new to them, start with 'Dry The Rain' and 'Al Sharp'. They frame that mix of folk and electronica pretty well.
Their song 'Dry The Rain' became a calling card with its looping acoustic guitar and weary vocal, showing up in films and TV to reach beyond their core audience. Tracks like 'Al Sharp' and 'Broke' had melodies that felt immediate yet off-kilter, with arrangements that built and dissolved in unexpected ways. Their music didn't fit neatly into commercial categories, but it left a body of work that still sounds distinctive.
The Beta Band formed in Scotland in the late 1990s with Steve Mason, Gordon Anderson, John Maclean, and Robin Jones. They released a series of EPs and albums including The Three EPs in 1998, Champion Versions in 1999, Hot Shots II in 2001, and Heroes to Zeros in 2004. They stopped recording together after 2004.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
