The Black Tie Operation was a Chicago quartet that started in the early 1990s, mixing alternative rock with electronica and hip-hop. Their 1993 debut album 'Blinded' gave them some attention with its moody sound and thoughtful lyrics. The band included Ron Hawkins on vocals and various instruments, Dave Schneider on guitar and bass, Neil Hennessy on drums, and Dave Shirk handling DJ and keyboard duties.
They followed up with albums like 'The Ballad of Kid Chaos' in 1995, '12' in 1997, and 'Blood & Sand' in 2000. Each record kept experimenting with those electronic and rock elements, never settling into one predictable style. Songs like 'Bottle Of Rum' and 'Death Of A Revolutionary' showed their range.
The band's lyrics often touched on alienation and social issues, which drew both strong fans and some criticism. They developed a cult following for that willingness to tackle uncomfortable subjects. The Black Tie Operation stopped working together around 2002.
