The Blue Nile formed in Glasgow in the mid-1980s, with Paul Buchanan, Robert Bell, and PJ Moore meeting in Stirling. Their first album, 'A Walk Across the Rooftops,' came out in 1984. It was followed five years later by 'Hats,' which included songs like 'Let's Go Out Tonight' and 'The Downtown Lights.'
Their music had a sparse, atmospheric quality, with Buchanan's vocals floating over minimal arrangements. They worked slowly, with long stretches between records, and mostly avoided the usual music industry machinery.
In 1996, drummer PJ Moore died in a car accident. After that, the band's output became even more sporadic, though they did release another album in 2004. Songs like 'Tinseltown In The Rain' and 'Happiness' have kept their small catalog in circulation.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
