The Bonez came together in Northern England toward the end of the 1970s. The lineup included Ray on vocals, guitarists Josh and Tony, bassist Mick, and drummer Dave. They played a loud, rough mix of punk and heavy metal that built them a cult audience through their live shows.
In 1980 they put out their self-titled debut album. The single "Ray" from that record caught people's attention with its stark lyrics about addiction and desperation. It became something of an anthem for listeners who recognized those struggles.
After that first album, The Bonez released a few more records in the early and mid‑80s, Dark Days in 1982, Outcasts in 1984, and The Final Chapter in 1986. The band broke up toward the end of that decade. Ray later worked as a singer‑songwriter, while Josh and Tony started another group called The Shadows.
