The Book of Fears formed in 2004 when Ian Bland and Mark Morris came together after their previous band, The Dwellers, ended. They started writing songs that leaned into darker, more introspective themes, which became the foundation for their sound.
Their self-titled debut album came out in 2006 and included the track "I Lost It All." That song connected with listeners and helped define their early work, which often dealt with themes of loss and searching.
In 2009, drummer Michael James left the group. David Scott joined as the new drummer, though his arrival brought some outside attention due to his past musical associations. The band continued working after this lineup change.
