The Boom

The Boom formed in 1989 around Kazufumi Miyazawa on vocals and guitar, his brother Takao on bass, and Yoshiyuki Miyake on drums. They started playing in Okinawa, where the local culture and folk traditions seeped into their music.

In 1992, Kazufumi wrote "Shima Uta," a ballad about missing his grandfather and his home. Sung partly in the Okinawan language, it connected with listeners in a way their earlier work hadn't. The song became a hit, defining the band for many.

They kept recording through the mid-90s, putting out albums like "Kara no Tobira" and "Island." Other songs like "Kaze ni naritai" and "Kaerou Kana" showed their mix of folk melodies and straightforward rock. Their live shows were known for being energetic, even as the music stayed rooted in that Okinawan feeling.
