The Chats formed in 2016 in Coolum Beach, Australia, with Eamon Sandwith on vocals and guitar, Josh Price on bass, and Matt Boggis on drums. They built a local following through live shows before their 2017 single 'Smoko' went viral. That song's deadpan take on workplace culture, with its simple guitar riff and shouted chorus, became their calling card.
Their first album, 'High Risk Behaviour,' came out in 2020, followed by 'Get This in Ya' in 2022. Songs like 'Pub Feed,' 'Bus Money,' and 'The Price of Smokes' stick to their formula of short, fast tracks about everyday Australian life. The lyrics are direct and often funny, delivered over straightforward punk arrangements.
They've been called crude or too simple by some critics, but that hasn't slowed them down. The band's appeal lies in its lack of pretense and the relatable, sometimes absurd details in songs like '6L GTR' and 'Temperature.' They work quickly and keep things basic, which feels like part of the point.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
