The Clannade formed in the early 1970s in Gweedore, County Donegal, with siblings Máire, Ciarán, Pól, and Moya Brennan along with their uncle Noel Duggan. They started with traditional Irish folk songs but developed their own arrangements and harmonies that felt different from what was happening around them at the time.
Their album "Legend" from 1984 and "Macalla" from 1985 are among their better-known releases. Pól Brennan wrote "Cigarettes Don't Lie," which became one of their more recognizable songs. They also recorded "Miss Wonderfull."
Some traditionalists weren't sure about their approach early on, but they kept working. The group's sound had a certain atmospheric quality that wasn't quite like other Irish acts of the period.
