Background notes

Archive material and source history

The Criminals came out of Los Angeles in the mid-1970s, with Johnny Strike on vocals. Their debut album 'No Surrender' arrived in 1977. They played a raw, energetic kind of punk.

In 1982 they put out 'Union Yes,' a song that became a rallying cry for labor unions. The band faced criticism for confrontational lyrics and live shows, and internal tensions led to lineup changes. Guitarist Jimmy Riot and bassist Billy Blast were among those who left.

They released a few more records, including 'Fight the Power' in 1979 and 'The Final Conflict.'
