The Dirty Three

The Dirty Three formed in Melbourne in the early 1990s with Warren Ellis on violin, Mick Turner on guitar, and Jim White on drums. Their 1998 album 'Whatever You Love, You Are' included the track 'Great Waves,' which became one of their most recognized pieces. The song builds around Ellis's violin melodies over Turner's guitar and White's drumming, with Turner's lyrics touching on themes of loss. Their 2000 album 'Come Here Please' included a cover of 'Danny Boy' that sparked some discussion about cultural appropriation, though the band continued working.

They developed a following among listeners drawn to their particular blend of chaotic and melodic elements, with Ellis's violin often serving as the central voice in their instrumental compositions. While they never aimed for mainstream popularity, their recordings found an audience interested in music that operated outside conventional rock structures.
