The Distance formed in Los Angeles in the late 1990s as a quartet with Cody Cain on vocals and guitar, Jake Rodriguez on bass, Alex Hanson on drums, and Emily Carter on keyboards. Their 2002 debut album 'At Least I'm Good At Something' gave them their breakthrough, with the title track becoming their most recognizable song. That album also included tracks like 'And I Begin The Longest Year Ever' and 'Broken Promises' that defined their early sound.
Emily Carter left the band in 2004, and The Distance continued as a trio for their next album 'Echoes of the Distant Past' in 2005. They released two more studio albums, 'After the Rain' in 2008 and 'The Road Less Traveled' in 2012. Drummer Alex Hanson departed in 2009, with Matt Chambers taking over on drums for their final album.
Their music had an alt-rock foundation with prominent keyboard elements during Carter's tenure. Songs like 'And If (The Lucky Ones)' and 'Before It's Gone' showed their range within that style. While their later work didn't reach the same commercial level as their debut, they maintained a following through their studio recordings and live shows.
