The Distillers formed in Los Angeles in 1998, led by vocalist and guitarist Brody Dalle. She had been in a band called Sourpuss before starting this one with guitarist Tony Bevilacqua, bassist Ryan Sinn, and drummer Andy Granelli. Their first album, 'Coral Fang,' came out in 2000 and got some attention for its raw punk energy and Dalle's forceful singing.
In 2002 they released their self-titled second album, which included the song 'Drain The Blood.' That track got radio play and helped the record reach number 22 on the Billboard 200 chart. Around this time they were known for intense live shows and Dalle's direct, unapologetic lyrics in songs like 'City Of Angels' and 'Beat Your Heart Out.'
The band dealt with various tensions behind the scenes, and their output slowed after that period. They eventually stopped working together, though Dalle continued making music with other projects. The Distillers' catalog, particularly those early 2000s records, still gets played by fans who like that specific strain of loud, melodic punk.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
