The Ex formed in Amsterdam in 1979, coming out of the city's punk and post-punk scene. The original lineup included guitarist Terrie Hessels, bassist Luc Boyer, drummer G.W. Sok, and vocalist and saxophonist Jeroen Kleijn. Over time, members have shifted, with Hessels and Boyer remaining alongside drummer Katherina Bornefeld and saxophonist and vocalist Andy Moor.
Their music pulls from punk, jazz, improvisation, and various global traditions, avoiding any single genre. Songs like "Barricades" and "Dutch Disease" show their raw, dissonant guitar work and rhythmic drive, with saxophones and vocals weaving through the noise. They've released more than twenty studio albums, including "Disturbing the Peace" from 1982, "Blue Moon" from 1993, and "Turn" from 1999.
The band has worked with improvisers like Tom Cora and Han Bennink, and their sound has drawn from Ethiopian jazz and Eastern European folk music.
