Editor's note

The Gift's Portuguese pop with a restless streak

A Lisbon quartet that started with 'Primavera' and kept shifting shape.

For their early energy, 'Primavera' still holds up. If you want their later mood, try 'Red Light'.

They've been Portugal's reliable pop engine for over two decades, but never settled into one sound. 'Primavera' was the early hit that put them on the map, and later tracks like 'Red Light' show a darker, more electronic side. Their 2007 album 'Explode' was released only online, which felt like a statement back then.

They formed in the mid-1990s as a quartet with Nuno Bettencourt on guitar. Bettencourt left in 2004, and the lineup changed again with new members coming in. Their sound moved from the bright pop of 'Primavera' to the more introspective work on albums like 'Altar' and 'Vertigem'.

The Gift formed in Portugal during the mid-1990s as a quartet with Nuno Bettencourt on guitar, Sónia Tavares on vocals, John Gonçalves on bass, and Miguel Ribeiro on drums. Their debut album 'Vinyl' came out in 1999 and included the song 'Primavera,' which became a hit. That track helped establish them early on.

Bettencourt left the band in 2004, and the lineup shifted with Pedro Ribeiro joining on guitar and Márcio Buzelli replacing Gonçalves on bass. They released their fourth album 'Explode' exclusively online in 2007, a move that drew mixed reactions at the time. Later albums like 'Altar' from 2009 and another called 'Primavera' in 2012 showed them working in more introspective territory. Their 2019 album 'Vertigem' is their most recent.
