The Gilbertos formed around João Gilberto in Rio de Janeiro during the 1950s. João's quiet guitar style and vocal delivery helped shape what became known as bossa nova. His wife Astrud Gilberto sang with the group, and their sound caught the ear of American saxophonist Stan Getz.
In 1963, they recorded the album "Getz/Gilberto" with Getz. Astrud sang on "The Girl from Ipanema," which became widely known outside Brazil. The group also recorded songs like "Dia D." João Gilberto was known for being particular about how the music should sound, which sometimes created tension.
Their recordings from that period introduced bossa nova's relaxed rhythms to listeners in the United States and Europe. The music drew from samba but felt lighter and more intimate, built around João's guitar patterns and breathy singing. That approach influenced other musicians who heard it.
