Archive material and source history
The Grates formed in Brisbane in 2002, with Patience Hodgson on vocals, John Rejmer on guitar, Matt Rejmer on drums, and Andrew Patterson on keyboards. Their debut album 'Gravity Won't Get You High' came out in 2006 and got them an ARIA Award nomination for Best New Artist. They put out three more albums: 'Teeth Lost, Hearts Won' in 2008, 'Secret Rituals' in 2011, and 'The Great Escape' in 2014.
Hodgson's voice carried songs like 'Seek Me' and 'Aw Yeah!' over guitar and keyboard lines that mixed pop and rock. The band stopped playing together in 2015.
