The Hearts of Soul came out of Philadelphia in the late 1960s, led by vocalist Jerry "Pooh" Gibbs. They had a hit with "Waterman" in 1969, which got some radio play on R&B stations and crossed over to the pop charts. The band included Arthur "Poo-Poo" Franklin on bass, Richard "Ricky" Thompson on drums, Ernest "Tank" Jackson on guitar, and Lloyd "Baby Lloyd" McCray on keyboards.
They recorded for Okeh Records and put out a few albums in the early 1970s, like "The Beginning" and "Naturally." The sound was straightforward soul with group harmonies, the kind of thing you'd hear alongside records by Otis Redding or Sam & Dave at the time. They kept at it through the middle of the decade with albums like "Check Out Your Mind" and "Magic Touch."
There were some delays with their label and talk of internal friction, but the core lineup stayed together for most of their run. They were a working band from Philadelphia that had one real moment in the sun with "Waterman," and then kept making records for a few more years.
