Background notes

Archive material and source history

The High-Lows formed in 1988 in Fukuoka, Japan, with Masatoshi Mashima on vocals, Kenji Sawada on guitar, Naoki Yoshitake on bass, and Hirofumi Nakagawa on drums. Their sound leaned toward melodic pop with introspective lyrics, and songs like 'Natsu Nandana' and 'Mune ga dokidoki' became hits.

In 1994, Sawada's cancer diagnosis forced the band to pause activities temporarily. He recovered and returned to performing. The group sometimes drew attention for outspoken lyrics, as in 'Northern Lights,' which commented on the Aum Shinrikyo cult attack and sparked some criticism.

They released eight studio albums, including 'Blue Sky' and 'Boxer,' along with live recordings and singles. Their work shifted over time from straightforward pop toward more experimental directions.
